Souls in Flight, or Almas en Vuelo, is my little love letter to a beloved muse. This is one of my smaller pieces that I could work on in my comfy corner, with a cup of tea nearby and a blanket on my lap. I imagined Frida, her vivid life, innumerable struggles, and immense talent and vision.
Having grown up both Mexican and Black, I used to imagine I had a border within me that I was constantly having to cross, never quite feeling at home in my own skin. Over the years, though, I have come to appreciate being able to draw from both sides of my self, navigating the stories, lessons, and experiences that shape my identity and I love being able to draw from them.
As butterflies represent souls, I wanted to include them here with another presence that has brought so much beauty and reflection in my own life. Salud, amigos. 🦋
