With my craving for a little loose painting out of the way, it was time to bring out this sweet little feathered friend, sitting meditatively on his branch. I loved the hours of quiet introspection that unfurled slowly as I worked on this piece; so much so that I had to make another to accompany it! There are other, as with this one, where I sit with the blank surface and wait to see what it reveals. A process that is one of my favorites to stoke the creative fire, is to start with background colors that I am feeling at the moment: a wash of background color\/s, and loose swathes of spray paint, and accent hues with a palette knife or swiped or thrown on. It was a muted blue with Payne's Gray that emerged. It made for a calm backdrop that then became a scene for my muse: full-bodied and serene, reaching for the remnants of a dream. I didn't want to begin with a white background, so I settled into a familiar and satisfying process of laying down color and texture with brush, spray paint, and whatever tools I had at hand. This part of the paintings is always so free and helps me to channel the mood I end up flowing with. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCalm blues and deep pinks and purples were cut with bright yellow and swathes of white that became a dreamy background for a muse lost in her thoughts. Bringing her onto the canvas became a practice in centering the moment. Each stroke of the brush was a remembering of the strength and joy found in the creative path. And a special delight was, in wandering with my camera, I chanced upon an owl, who patiently waited while I fumbled with the unfamiliar dials and buttons to snap several photos. My love of the female form asserted itself and, though the figure was finished, I ended up redrawing and repainting until it was \u003cem\u003eright\u003c\/em\u003e. I had set this one aside for so long; it sat, barely started, for months. I couldn't figure out what was blocking me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was the subject! Now that she was in place, I was able to finish her in a matter of hours. Now I know. The softness, curves, shadows and light of the feminine body inspire me and draw me to capture them on the canvas. Perhaps, someday, I'll try the male figure again. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor now, I was excited to bring into focus a muse poised and pensive, as delectable and beautiful as the spread around her. Her mask begs the question: is she the pursued or the pursuer?
